Common questions

Why isn’t a plant I want showing?

Almost always it is not the season where you are. Sow Now only lists what can go in now, worked out from your town’s average monthly temperatures. Switch to Next month in the results, or open the month guides to see when it goes in. It may also be filtered out by an answer, such as space, sun or how long you can wait. A greyed tile tells you which answer is in the way and lets you change it.

How do you decide what to show?

We check that the month’s temperature suits sowing, that there is enough warm season to finish, and, for fruit trees and perennials, that your winters are neither too cold nor too mild. Then your answers narrow the list. The full explanation is on the About page.

My patch has gone.

Your patch lives only in this browser. Private windows, clearing site data or a different browser or device will not show it. Use Share on the patch page to get a link that restores it anywhere.

The climate looks wrong for my garden.

We use average temperatures for a roughly 50 km square, so hills, frost pockets, coasts and warm walls are not captured. Treat the dates as a guide and trust local knowledge for the edges of the season. Tell us if a town looks wrong.
